Levelling the Field – Esmée Fairbairn Foundation

Levelling the Field is the first major research project to look broadly at the experiences of trans people of colour in the UK. It was conceived of, and led, by and for trans people of colour.

Levelling the Field was conducted over three years by a team that included Sidney Amir (the TLP’s TPOC Coordinator), staff at the Trans Learning Partnership, and a group of community researchers.

It benefited from an advisory group of trans people of colour with varied life experiences, as well as academic advisors from the University of Glasgow, Oxford Brookes University, and Goldsmiths University. It was funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.

Levelling the Field’s research explored the following:

  1. Pertinent issues affecting TPoC in the UK
  2. Structural barriers encountered by TPoC whilst accessing services and assets
  3. What impact (if any) the recent public discourse on racial justice and structural
inequality has had on TPoC in the UK

We are now ready to share our findings with you.

We know that people are often short of time and energy to read long reports, so we have split our findings up to make things more easily digestible!

You can view a shorter (25 page) summary version of the report here: [link]

If you only have 10 minutes, we recommend the 4-page summary and recommendations: [link]

If you have time, we would love you to read the full (80 page) report here as it contains our community researchers’ contributions in their entirety, which produced truly rich and nuanced data and findings: [link]

For quotes and insights directly from participants we especially recommend reading our findings section on pages 20-68.

We’ve also produced a short illustrated zine from this project, which you can read here: [link]

Please share widely 😊
