Good Data Project

Monitoring & Evaluating Data

The Good Data: Monitoring & Evaluating Data Project is a collaboration between each of the partnership organisations that create the Trans Learning Partnership: Spectra, Gendered Intelligence, Mermaids & The LGBT Foundation.

Each partner organisation has a ‘MVE data officer’ working in collaboration with the Trans Learning Partnership and the other partner’s data officers. The MVE Data Officers have examined the data collection systems of their Partner Organisations, and implement feedback from the Trans Learning Partnership to improve and unify approaches to data collection.

Following on from this work, the Trans Learning Partnership have produced two resources that use insights from routinely collected service data: The Data Practice Report & Resources, and the Trans Poverty Index Report. This is an example of how trans organisations can use the data they already collect when looking to create research reports that can be used as evidence when lobbying for change.

Data Practice Resources

Based upon the work conducted between the Partner Organisation’s  to assess and improve their Data Collection, the MVE Data Officers in collaboration with the Trans Learning Partnership created a best practice guidance for organisations wanting to collect data on services users while being trans affirming.

The resources created focus on:

  • Information about data and best practice
  •  The rationale for collecting demographic data
  • Recommendations for the information that should be collected for each demographic characteristic and how that information should be collected
  • Ways to effectively gather service evaluation data

Trans Poverty Index

A poverty index is a tool used to measure the extent, intensity and nature of poverty within a specific group or population. The UK Government records relative levels of deprivation in 33,755 small areas or neighbourhoods. Through comparing the postcodes of people within a group or a minority demographic to these areas you can explore the level of poverty and type of deprivation people within that group are likely to experience.  While this analysis has been used for other demographics (e.g. race/ethnicity, age), until now, this had not been used to look at the deprivations trans communities experience.

Through using the data already collected and held by the Partner Organisations, we were able to access an anonymised dataset of 10,582 trans service users and found that 11% of all our service users are in the top 20% most deprived areas in England.

The Trans Learning Partnership are currently working on a report (due to be published in June 2026) which will explore the relationship between poverty index ratings for service users and which services they are accessing, and the areas of concern they are seeking support with.  This report will enhance understandings around the relationship between trans community and poverty, and firmly place trans issues onto the poverty agenda.

Through this project we aim to demonstrate to other  trans and LGBTQIA+ organisations that they  already hold a wealth of information on the needs of their service users, and can use this information to evidence the experiences and needs of trans people at a national level.
